Rebuilding the South Hendra Farm Dairy Complex Extension

Background

South Hendra Farm in Liskeard, Cornwall needed to replace their Dairy complex extension, which was a failed structure adjoining the existing dairy complex. To maximise their dairy productivity and improve animal welfare, the new building needed to be structurally sound and functionally improved compared to the demolished one.

Challenge

The failed structure had a number of limitations which impacted farm operations, such as inadequate lighting which impacted day to day activities and the housing of calves. The livestock welfare was also affected by a lack of space and unhygienic water troughs which were worn out. Given the age of the structure, electrical safety was also identified as a concern with a need for testing and updating. In addition to these challenges, the replacement of the faulty structure would need to be handled while ensuring the stability of the remaining dairy complex during construction. Additionally, the new building needed to address several shortcomings of the old one:

Solution

To tackle the challenges, Corserv Facilities produced a thorough construction plan. First, temporary bracing secured the existing structure before the failed extension's demolition. A sturdy new foundation was then laid, followed by the erection of a robust steel frame and an insulated roof for both strength and weatherproofing. Durable cladding enveloped the building, and surrounding groundworks, including concrete repairs, which were carefully completed. The interior received a significant upgrade, including larger and safer animal pens, calving shed lighting optimised for ideal levels, hygienic and easily accessible water troughs, and a fully updated and tested electrical installation with proper earthing. Throughout the construction process, rigorous quality control checks ensured every aspect met the highest standards. This comprehensive approach not only addressed the initial concerns but also delivered a vastly improved and functional space for both farmer and livestock.

Result

The project was successfully executed on time and within budget. The new dairy complex extension has significantly improved animal welfare, enhanced working conditions and increased safety particularly with electrical compliance. Mr Stephen Morgan, Landlord of South Hendra Farm summarised, "We have been impressed with the impact you have had on getting this scheme started and finished. Thank you and we look forward to working with you on future projects."
